What does a year of friendship look like? This artwork is a visual representation of every interaction I had with a friend during my thirty-seventh year of life: invitations, cancelled plans, trips, parties, chance meetings, movie nights, etc. The over one hundred foot long study emerges from a TI-5105 calculator, as if calculated by a device designed to record one's friendships. As we live through what social scientists have called "the friendship recession", where weekly time spent with friends has declined by 40% since 2014, this artwork asks, how would our friendships look different if we took them this seriously?
“Social Studies” was exhibited in 2026 at Grand Valley State University as part of “Shot With a Lead Arrow,” the first aromantic art exhibition in the United States.
